Lesson pLan
Cori LaVergne taught a class on Quick Changes in Theatre to the Intermediate class. She briefly went over the history of quick changes and their importance in theatre, as well as provided examples of quick changes on Broadway. For a hands-on activity, each student paired themselves with a partner and were allowed to design a mock-up (a mini version) of a quick change found in one of four given examples. Each pair was given one square foot of red and white fabric, as well as one roll of seam tape and one wooden mannequin. This exercise allowed students to design for an aspect of a show within given parameters using the CARISIE design process through visual, aural, and physical means.
Above are before and after pictures of a mock-up that two students design for a transformation dress in Cinderella. The change needed to occur on stage in five seconds or less. They achieved this by making the hem of the skirt tuck into the waist ribbon and having the actress untuck it as she spins to transform from rags to riches.
To the right are Cori's formal lesson plan as well as the powerpoint she showed to the class.
